Fort Stanwix National Monument is located in downtown Rome, New York State. The fort was part of the French and Indian War in 1750s and the Revolutionary War in the 1770s. Sentries were soldiers assigned to guard the fort. They are paraded around the top of the walls, walked outside the fort, or stood at the gate. During the war for independence, American victory at this frontier fort directly contributed to the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777; setting the stage for westward expansion through New York.
